영어로 시간 표현

just : 방금 어떤 일이 벌어져서 끝났다 / 이제 막 무엇을 시작한 시점이다.

be just about to : 지금 막 ~하려고 하다.

some time ago , a while ago : 얼마 전에 (어느 정도의 시간이 흐름)

not (very, too) long ago : 얼마 전에 (오래 되지 않은 과거)

a while back : 꽤 오래 전에

콜로케이션이란 무엇인가?

콜로케이션은 현지인들의 영어단어 짝 혹은 그룹이다. 이러한 단어의 조합은 현지인들에게 굉장히 자연스럽게 들린다. 그러나 영어를 공부하는 사람들은 이런 조합을 만들기 위해서 약간의 노력을 더 가미해야 된다. 올바른 두 단어를 조합하더라도 현지인들에게는 잘못된 단어로 들릴 수 있다.

예를 들으면 'fast'라는 단어는 'cars'와 붙일 수 있지만, 'a glance'와 붙일 수 없다.

어떤 단어 조합은 고정된 형태가 있다. take a photo 에서는 take를 대체할 단어가 없는 것처럼. 

그보다는 조금 유연한 조합은 keep to, stick to the rules가 있다.

그 외의 콜로케이션도 봐보자.

가끔 이상한 조합으로 해도 현지인들이 알아듣긴 하겠지만 자연스럽지 않다는 것을 알아야 한다.

Compounds and idioms

Compounds는 2개의 단어가 붙어져서 생긴 단어다. 이 단어들은 분리해서 쓰거나 하이픈(-)으로 연결해서 쓰기도 한다. 

예를 들면 car park, post office, narrow-minded, shoelaces, teapot.

Idiom은 조합이 고정된 단어인데 이 자체로 의미를 알아차리기 어렵다.

예를 들면 pass the buck이라는 idiom은 다른 사람에게 책임을 전가해서 혼자 책임지는걸 피하는 그런 의미인데 저 단어 자체로 이해하기에는 한계가 있다.

Why learn collocations?

1. 자연스럽게 말하는 방법이기 때문

2. 풍성하게 말을 할 수 있는 다양한 어휘를 구사할 수 있게 되기 때문

3. 작문을 할 때 더 느낌있게 쓸 수 있다.

가난은 범죄를 야기한다보다 가난은 범죄를 낳는다 라는게 더 느낌있어 보인다.
